Up to 10 percent of a home's energy consumption can be credited to standby power. Also called phantom power, this refers to the energy consumed by appliances and electronics that are plugged in but are not being used. An average home will have chargers, video game consoles, TVs and kitchen appliances plugged in at any given time, and these devices, though switched off, can make a notable contribution to the electricity bill. Pulling the plug is an easy way to save five to 10 percent on a home's electric bill. Fortunately, home automation accessories, such as power strips, offer a solution to this problem.
Smart power strips are particularly useful in saving power if a home's residents keep forgetting to unplug their devices. They are also a great way to cut off power from appliances and other household equipment that are spatially challenging to reach, or for use by people with disabilities. With most models having built-in protection from hazards such as surges, short circuits, overload and overcurrent, as well as saving power, smart power strips also help prevent device breakdown from these adverse events.
Enabled by a dedicated mobile application or voice assistant such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, smart power strips offer the advantage of wireless control over each individual power socket. Aside from the convenience of turning off sockets remotely when not in use, some of these devices have scheduling and timing functions that allow users to have greater control over the strip's power consumption, having them turn on only when and for as long as needed. As a useful bonus, smart power strips have built-in USB-A and USB-C charging ports for phones, tablets and other small electronics.
A smart power strip is also relatively easy to set up. Simply connect it to the home's Wi-Fi network, open the smartphone application and it is good to go. With consumers becoming more aware of home automation, its components and power-saving benefits, products such as smart power strips are increasingly popular.

The WT006 from Shenzhen Rishenghua Technology Co. Ltd is a smart power strip with three type G or UK sockets and four USB Type-A ports, with the latter having 3.6A maximum total output. It pairs with a dedicated smartphone application for wireless control of the sockets, timer setting and scheduling. Voice control via Amazon Alexa is also supported. Product housing is made of thermoplastic.

Ltd's RSH-WT008-UK-5 is a 100 to 250V, 13A smart power strip with six UK outlets that can handle up to 1,250W and four USB Type-A ports, each with 2.1A maximum output. It is Wi-Fi-enabled, compatible with voice assistants Amazon Alexa and Google Home and has timer and scheduling functions.
This power strip, with a 2m-long cord and a UK plug, has a flame-retardant PC housing.
With app, voice control
The FAC-WSC401D-1 is a smart power strip manufactured by Guangdong Bekey Technology Co. Ltd. It has four 100V to 240V US outlets, each delivering 10A maximum current at 125V and with surge protection. This device also includes two USB Type-A ports and can be controlled via app or voice such Amazon Alexa and Google Home. It works with IFTTT.
Supports voice control
Changzhou Transmei Electronic Technology Co. Ltd's TM-PS-IND02 is a smart power strip with three 100 to 240VAC universal sockets and four USB Type-A ports. Maximum current is 16A. The IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi module supports WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK security protocols. The device is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa and IFTTT.
Four UK outlets
The CR-44UK from Shenzhen Chaoran Technology Corp. is a smart power strip with four UK outlets and USB Type-A ports. It connects to a dedicated smartphone application via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi to enable remote control and smart functions such as timer setting and scheduling. Voice control via Amazon Alexa, Echo Dot or Google Home is supported.
Voice-enabled
Dongguan Maijia Intelligent Technology Co. Ltd's MP602 is a smart power strip with three 100 to 240VAC US sockets, three 5V, 2.1A USB Type-A ports and a 2.1m-long cord. It can be used with Tuya, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
