Suppliers are leveraging their domestic access to silver, gemstones and skilled silversmiths to offer a wide array of products.
Indonesia offers a deep and wide selection of silver jewelry, with options ranging from statement pieces featuring elaborate metalwork and various accents, to delicate models with few embellishments.
A key factor enabling makers to offer diverse options is having domestic access to their main raw material -- silver. Indonesia is one of the major producers of silver, ranking 16th in 2017, according to the World Silver Survey 2018 report produced for The Silver Institute by the GFMS Team at Thomson Reuters.
In addition, Indonesia has mines that produce gold, copper, tin, nickel and other minerals. Various precious and semiprecious stones, including opal, citrine, diamond, amethyst and jasper, can also be found in the country.
Being home to silversmiths whose techniques have been passed down from previous generations is another advantage of the local industry, as this enables the creation of designs that are unique to a locality. Javanese craftsmen, for instance, are popular for fine filigree work, while those in Bali are known for their granulation technique.
Silver jewelry suppliers are leveraging their access to skilled craftsmen and various raw materials to expand further their selections of traditional and contemporary pieces. Traditional handcrafted designs usually highlight Balinese, Javanese and other ethnic motifs. Batik patterns, for instance, are adopted in various product categories.
Religious and nature-inspired motifs are also popular. Recent releases include pieces with silverwork in the shape of leaves, flowers and snakes.
Contemporary pieces, meanwhile, often feature geometric motifs or abstract designs.
Crystals, pearls and semiprecious stones continue to be popular embellishments. In addition, some makers are adorning their models with pieces of coconut shell, bamboo and other environment-friendly materials.
