The company is investing in new equipment to complement its existing testing services, and aims to contribute in the global implementation of sustainable and socially responsible practices.

UK-based quality inspection and certification provider Intertek has announced recently the expansion of its textile-testing capability in the US by investing in advanced equipment. The company has also revealed its intention to collaborate with brands and retailers in cleaning up the textile supply chain by committing to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Program.

Intertek's new facility will be based in the state of Illinois, and will house equipment for evaluating evaporation and water vapor-transmission rates, and anti-bacterial and -fungal properties of fabrics. The new machines will enable manufacturers to verify claims of breathability, and quick-drying and anti-microbial qualities in newly launched products. These are also expected to complement the company's existing moisture-wicking, windproofing, UV-protection, fiber and restricted chemical, dimensional stability, colorfastness and flammability testing services. The testing machines can be used on a range of items from fabric samples to finished products. This expansion is foreseen to be of great benefit for manufacturers of sports apparel, outdoor wear and furniture in the country.

"Our priority has always been providing our customers with innovative solutions to help support functional and performance claims of their products in order to improve their competitive position. Bringing these textile capabilities to the US and building off our existing textile services will help customers in the region leverage our services and expertise in order to bring in-demand fabrics to the industry more quickly and easily," Gregg Tiemann, executive vice president at Intertek, said in a press statement.

As regards with Intertek's partnership with the ZDHC Program, the company aims to help in the global implementation of sustainable and socially responsible practices in the textile, leather and footwear industries through active engagement with brands, retailers and stakeholders. This includes providing technical know-how in assisting brands in developing wastewater and sludge-testing services in their production facilities.

Intertek will likewise be involved in key ZDHC initiatives such as chemical management system (CMS) auditing services, training for the ZDHC Academy, manufacturing restricted substances lists (MRSL) management and testing, and data contribution in the ZDHC Gateway.
