Laser diodes are widely used in various industries and will continue to enjoy double-digit growth in the coming years. In 2023, they reached $11.6 billion globally and are projected to be in the scale of $29.1 billion by 2032 or at a CAGR of 10.4 percent, according to the IMARC Group. The market research company attributes this upward trend to rising demand for coherent light in the healthcare, materials processing and automotive sectors.
In China, manufacturers offer laser diodes used in computers, stage lighting, medical and communications equipment, and military applications. These semiconductor devices are available in DIP and SMD configurations, with wavelengths of 635, 650, 670, 690, 780, 810, 860 and 980nm and rated power of 2 to 400mW. They are made using semiconductor materials, such as GaAs and InP, and silver, gold, adhesive and cases sourced domestically or from foreign providers, depending on requirements.
To expand their market reach, Chinese suppliers will develop high-power units starting from 20W in the years ahead. They hope to get a share in this segment, which is currently in demand in China and overseas, citing Japanese companies that have already introduced up to 100W laser diodes.
