Defective mattresses pose potential safety hazard.

This May, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Ikea would be recalling 150,000 crib mattresses. This is in addition to the pull outs that occurred earlier this year. Recalled crib mattresses with the model names Sultan and Vyssa were made in the US, Mexico, Poland and China, with a manufacturing date stamp of May 4, 2014 or earlier. Two infants reportedly got stuck in the gap between the mattress and the crib that was more than two fingers thick, which makes the mattress defective.

Ikea Canada also issued a recall on Sultan crib mattresses due to the defective size just the day before, although the units have not been sold in the country since August 2010.

According to an Ikea spokesperson, the recall affected only North American stores. The mattress model was also sold online on the Ikea USA website from October 2000 to May 2014.

As of 2014, the Scandinavian retailer's biggest sales share is still in Europe, while sales grew by 5.9 percent from the previous year.
