Doors are entry and exit points to a home or commercial space and come in variety of materials, including wood or timber, aluminum, glass, steel, hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and fiberglass, and are available in a wide range of sizes. They require the best door hinges to carry their weight, endure varying frequencies of use, withstand the environmental conditions where they are installed and, in some instances, add flair to overall entryway design.

With the construction industry on the upswing, driven by demand for more residential housing and commercial spaces and as renovation of aging structures continues, the market for door hinges has been expanding. It reached $275.17 million in 2021 and is projected to be valued at nearly $422.3 million by 2027, at a CAGR of 7.4 percent from 2022, according to Maximize Market Research.

Five common door hinges

Of the many different types of hinges, there are five found on most doors. They are butt, concealed, continuous, pivot and strap hinges.

1. Butt hinges

Butt hinges are categorized into full- and half-mortise, and full- and half-surface kinds with two, three or five knuckles, or swing-clear, wide-throw, spring, electrical-security, nonremovable pin and heavy-duty anchor designs. Further options based on the bearings include oil-impregnated, self-lubricating, nonferrous, and ball, plain and concealed types. These hinges can be used on standard, medium-weight and heavy wooden and metal doors. They are also available in variants with tamper-resistant pins for security.

2. Concealed or hidden door hinges

Concealed or hidden door hinges may be considered high-end but, in exchange, they ensure a clean look on door frames and offer security as they cannot be tampered with from the outside. They can be used on any door but not in high-traffic areas.

3. Continuous or piano hinges

Continuous or piano hinges match the full height of a door and distribute stress uniformly along the length of the door and the frame. As such, they are designed for heavily frequented areas such as retail shops, schools and hospitals.

There are geared and pin-and-barrel continuous types, with the former considered the strongest door hinges because of their construction and because they have teeth that mesh in open and closed positions.

Geared types are also regarded as more secure than standard butt hinges as they eliminate the gap between the door and the frame. This feature also makes them safe, preventing finger-pinch accidents.

Although durable, there are experts that do not recommended continuous hinges for use on ultraheavy doors or those made entirely of glass.

4. Pivot hinges

The best hinges for heavy doors as well as high-traffic entryways are pivot hinges because they provide bottom and top support. The bottom hardware, however, can easily corrode when exposed to the elements and will require replacement when used on exterior doors. In addition to standard designs, pivot hinges are available in self-closing types, mainly for doors in commercial spaces, and offset kinds for single-acting doors.

5. Strap hinges

Strap hinges have longer but narrower triangular leaves than other types and provide added stability and support to barn, shed and garage doors. They are meant to be seen and can have simple or intricate vintage, rustic and modern patterns, making them the most unique hinges.

Ornate engraved designs, which may be on leaves, knuckles or both, are also available in other hinges, especially those intended to be visible.

High-quality door hinges

Hinges are made of various metals, with steel and aluminum the most common.

Those made of cold rolled steel are strong and durable and will last long, while stainless steel versions have the added advantage of rust and corrosion resistance but are more expensive.

Aluminum hinges offer the same immunity when exposed to moisture and are about 40 percent lighter and less expensive too, and while durable, they are not as strong as steel.

There are bronze, and wrought- and cast-iron door hinges as well.

The most commonly used door hinges in homes measure 3.5x3.5in and three of them are enough to provide support. The two other standard sizes are 3x3in and 4x4in, with the latter sometimes adopted for exterior doors.

Architectural hinges, which are made of thicker material than their residential-grade counterparts and have nonremovable pins, are available in up to 6x6in, recommended for ultraheavy doors.

Conclusion

Hinges are critical but sometimes neglected hardware components of doors. Even with the most sophisticated locks, doors will not serve their purpose if the hinges holding them in place are defective. To select the best quality hinges, consider their properties and how they match the material, height, width, thickness, weight and location of the doors they will support.
