As miniaturization remains a key trend in the electronics industry, Chinese suppliers continue to promote flat transformers for applications that operate on high frequencies, which include switching power supplies and power converters. They offer these low-profile components in SMD and DIP configurations that have EI, EE, PQ, EF, EQ or RM cores and use single- or three-phase power.

Based on frequency, China-made transformers are available in ranges of 10 to 50kHz, 50 to 100kHz, 100 to 500kHz, 500kHz to 1MHz and above 1MHz. These have an input voltage of 0.5 to 1,000V, output voltage of 0.5 to 3,000V and efficiency exceeding 90 percent.

To ensure these components are up to par, most Chinese suppliers ensure compliance with the international safety requirements, including UL, CE, CQC and VDE, and the RoHS environmental standard.

Ferrite cores, coils, bobbins and cases are the key components used in manufacturing transformers. These are obtained from domestic or foreign companies as required by buyers. Their costs have been relatively stable in the recent past. However, copper, the main material for coils, rose in price during the past 12 months, forcing manufacturers to raise transformer prices by at least 5 percent. This trend may change in the coming months and see quoted prices level off.
