Although Samsung still holds the top position for smartphones, Micromax has narrowed the gap and is now the second-largest smartphone vendor in India.

While Samsung had been displaced by Xiaomi as the largest smartphone vendor by units sold in China in Q2, the troubled company is now facing significant pressure from Micromax in India. According to Counterpoint Research, Micromax became the largest mobile phone supplier in India, capturing 17 percent of the market in Q2 2014, up from 13 percent in Q1. Although Samsung still holds the largest share of unit shipments for smartphones 25.3 percent of the market, Micromax increased its own share of the smartphone market to 19 percent.

Overall, the smartphone market grew by 68 percent on an annual basis even as the overall mobile phone market grew by about 2 percent in Q2 2014. Tellingly, majority of that growth came from Indian smartphone brands.

While new market entrants such as Xiaomi are building strong followings, it remains to be seen if Micromax can continue its growth.
