Resistors, inductors and capacitors – an RLC circuit, in combination – are key components of any electronic device. RLCs accounted for as much as 90 percent of global passives shipments in 2021, with RF components the rest, according to Chinabaogao.
In current and next-generation electronics, miniaturization is a must to enable higher integration density. To fit onto shrinking circuits, passive components are coming in ever smaller chip packages. So far, the tiniest size achieved is 008004 or 0.25x0.125mm in inductors, which Murata developed in 2014 and started mass producing in 2020. This is expected to be a continuing trend for the coming years, along with 01005 or 0.4x0.2mm passives.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are the fastest-growing passive component category thanks to 5G deployment and the popularity of electric vehicles and solar energy. In addition to Murata, the key industry players in the MLCC market include SEMCO and Yageo.
In China, only the larger companies are developing high-end MLCCs, having started doing so two or three years ago to catch up with their foreign counterparts. Eyang, a top MLCC manufacturer with headquarters in Shenzhen, announced a factory project in Anhui province in January 2023. When fully operational, the facility will have an annual capacity of 500 billion units, including 008004 MLCCs for ICs and SiPs used in smart wearable and mobile electronics. These ultraminiature components will be available in rated voltages of 4, 6.3, 10, 16 and 25V, capacitance of 0.2 to 47pF for 16/25V C0G types and 100pF to 22nF for 2.5, 4, 6.3, 10 and 16V X5R kinds. C0G units have -55 to 125 C temperature range and X5R variants -55 to 85 C.
Prices of RLC components from Chinese suppliers will remain relatively stable in the coming months.
