Ceramic capacitors are widely used for their high reliability and stability at elevated operating frequencies and voltages, in addition to their small size and cost-effectiveness. In recent years, multilayer types have grown in demand and will continue to do so thanks to the nonstop miniaturization in electronics and the increasing electrification trend in the automotive industry.
Top players in China’s ceramic capacitor manufacturing have been focusing on realizing 01005 and 008004 MLCCs. Shenzhen Eyang has already introduced 008004 units, with COG types having 0.2 to 33pF capacitance and 16 or 25V rated voltage and X5R versions having 100pF to 22nF and 2.5 to 16V. It began operating the first phase of its MLCC project in Anhui province in early 2023 and will have an annual capacity of 500 billion units after mass production.
MLCCs from most Chinese suppliers, however, include NPO, X7R, X5R and Y5V variants in sizes of 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805 and larger. These have a capacitance ranging from 1nF to 1uF and a typical operating temperature of -55 to 125 C.
In the mainstream ceramic capacitor category, leaded and SMD types can be readily sourced from China, which have 0.5pF to 100µF capacitance and ±5, ±10 or ±15 percent tolerance rating.Companies source dielectric materials from Sakai Chemicals and Nihon Kagaku Sangyo of Japan as well as domestically from Three-Circle and Sinocera. The cost of this main input rose slightly in the past 12 months, but manufacturers kept their ceramic capacitor prices unchanged. In the case of MLCCs for consumer electronics, they lowered quotes due to competition. In the coming months, the situation is expected to stabilize.
