3RT, a company based in Australia, with help from researchers has successfully made tropical hardwood from pulpwood. The end product, called 3Wood, is said to have the same durability as real native tropical hardwood.

The advantages of the new engineered lumber include reduction in logging in tropical forests, carbon footprints and manufacturing wastage. According to 3RT managing director Peter Torreele, in a report from the Woodworking Network, usually only a small part of a big tree is used for making hardwood and the rest goes to waste.

Pulpwood is also said to cost lower than real hardwood, so the product could really contribute to better management of environment resources. Makers of furniture and wooden building materials, suppliers and end consumers could benefit well from this new kind of hardwood for quality is not compromised despite raw material price.
