As high-rise buildings become a popular housing option, the need for gardening solutions addressing space limitations is likewise growing.

The budding “green x urban lifestyle” trend has already resulted in several innovations that make indoor gardening possible and easy: hydroponic systems, grow light systems, self-watering pots and more.

Hydroponics, in particular, is showing more than great promise. In fact, areport by Research And Markets shows the global hydroponics market growing at a CAGR of 6.8 percent from this year through 2024.

The outlook is remarkably positive considering that indoor hydroponic systems are usually more expensive than normal soil gardening, an issue, the report said, manufacturers are addressing by directing R&D toward cost reduction.

Governments are also encouraging people to plant their own food in indoor gardens as agricultural lands and food supply shrink due to rising population and food demand.

As for markets where hydroponics solutions are big, Europe currently accounts for the biggest share at 47.3 percent. It is, understandably, also among the most advanced producers of hydroponic crops. Other regions, including Asia, are following this path.
