The new 7.9in tablet, which will be launched in China, is said to look a lot like the iPad mini.

Nokia’s upcoming N1 tablet

Despite sale of its devices and services unit to Microsoft a few months ago, Nokia is apparently not out of the tablet business. The company recently unveiled the Nokia N1, a new, slim tablet that will be available in 2015. Since the company’s factories went along with the sale to Microsoft, Nokia has contracted Foxconn to produce the tablet. The announcement also means that Nokia will be licensing the Nokia brand name to Foxconn, which is not a problem for Microsoft, whose own smartphone unit now runs with the Lumia brand name.

The 7.9in tablet will run Android 5.0 and feature Nokia’s innovative “Z Launcher”, a gesture recognition technology that allows users to write out letters onto the screen to search the tablet or run a Google search. The tablet itself bears a striking resemblance to the iPad mini—speaker, camera, and button placements are very similar to the Apple device. The tablet is somewhat thinner and lighter than the iPad mini, though the internal components are obviously quite different.

The tablet is expected to be launched in China at an initial price of US$250. Sales are seen to expand into Russia and some other European nations afterwards.
