OLED, bezel-less screens 'hot' in laptops

The trendiest display features in smartphones are now the latest craze in laptops.

Laptop innovation today follows the smartphone way. As you may have noticed, the biggest mobile phone upgrades are on the display side – OLEDs and less bezels. Laptops are taking the same path with both of the said screen features starting to become adopted.

Laptops with OLED and immersive bezel-less screens are anticipated to be a big trend this year after Samsung has revealed at the recent Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas a 15.6in 4K UHD OLED panel for notebooks and laptops. The panel is reported to be in production this month and will be available to source in March. Gaming laptop maker Razer also displayed at the tech show a gaming laptop with a high-resolution OLED panel. Several big brands have already a lineup of OLED laptops coming to the market. Same goes for bezel-less laptops, a lot of them have already emerged at tech shows, including IFA recently.

OLED laptops, despite being a pricier than non-OLED versions, are said to have better display contrast and brightness up to 600 nits. Bezel-less laptops also cost a bit more than traditional laptops but are attracting consumers with more screen space just like bezel-less smartphones do.

With more brands seeing the advantages and releasing more of these products, it seems that the market is now ready for the OLED and bezel-less laptop boom. The mid- to high-end consumer sides are also ready, for they can afford more of these laptops as spending capacity has increased, as mentioned in a laptop market forecast by Grand View Research. The forecast also states that key to overall laptop market growth in the next six years will be the popularity of online and AR/VR gaming. That application obviously requires a more immersive display, which is what OLED and bezel-less laptops are bringing to the table now. That can also push up demand for these laptop segments.
