Students from the University of California, Berkeley have successfully developed a power drill accessory that can help users learn how to use the tool.
The display- and sensor-integrating device called Drill Sergeant, mounts directly on power drills, saws and CNC equipment. The system is comprised of a tape measure that shows models and instructions for users on its digital projector. While the person is operating the tool, the accessory can give recommendations on technique and position. Also among the supported features are realtime drill depth and angle assist.
Having an accessory like Drill Sergeant could be beneficial for power drill makers, suppliers and end users. The reception for this product remains to be seen but it could suggest that it is possible that power tools of the future can be improved with digital screens that display relevant information.
