The traditional methods of removing snow and ice have often required tedious shoveling or the use of harmful corrosive agents. Some use salt to clear their pathways and melt ice and snow from plants and other items; however effective this may be, it could easily lead to over-salting and unnecessary pollution.

In response to this, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based company has introduced the Saltnets® mat, which is dubbed as the world's first ice and snow melting agent containment system.

The mat is built with patented nylon tubes that are filled with a mixture of sodium, calcium and magnesium chlorides, which are only released when exposed to moisture. The liquid brine can melt snow and ice at -15 F, and evaporates as soon as any moisture is gone.

By releasing salt in liquid form, users need not worry about salt getting stuck on their shoes or their pets' paws. With a controlled distribution, pets will also be prevented from licking the salt mixture, which could cause illnesses.

The mat is available in two sizes, which are 15.5x27.5 and 9x27.5in. Clips are available, enabling users to connect several pieces together for larger walkways.

Saltnets® is currently holding a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo. It is offered at $25.
