Samsung and Sony are now pulling away from the low end of the TV market as supplies from China decline temporarily.

Samsung's KS9800 line of TVs have curved 4K displays, with the most expensive model coming with an 88in screen for $20,000.

Samsung appears to be joining other TV makers in a move away from the commoditized low end of the market. The Verge said Samsung's new 4K TVs will cost between $1,499 and $19,999. To be fair, $1,500 is not too terrible for a 4K TV, and they all use quantum dot displays with HDR support. The $1,500 TV is 49in while the most expensive model uses an 88in curved screen.

TV makers are increasingly looking for ways to boost revenue in an era of LCD overproduction thanks to China manufacturers. Sony has already stopped producing new, low-priced TVs. Vizio has an interesting new take on smart TVs with models starting at $1,000, which is a good price for 4K resolution but not the sub-$500 that China producers helped create.

However, there could be a reprieve in April for LCD TV companies, according to a new report from IHS. A price rebound is expected because of supply constraints and promotions in China. Supplies of 32in displays from BOE and China Star fell in February by about 300,000 units each. LG Display also cut shipments by more than 400,000 units.

The China TV industry is likewise in the midst of special promotions, allowing consumers to save $50 to $150 on a new TV if they trade in an old one. This could stimulate demand for LCD TVs while there is a reduced supply. IHS warns, though, that the price rebound could be short-lived because the overcapacity issue in the market has not changed.

While bigger companies want to avoid selling inexpensive LCD TVs, domestic suppliers are still chugging away in this market. The combination of said factors is good news for buyers, even with a temporary pause in declining TV prices.
