Skagen's $195 analog watch is also smart

Smart watches have been around for a few years now, but the category is still evolving. The common perception of a smart watch is a device with an LCD screen that passes along notifications and helps people keep track of their activity throughout the day. Some companies have even tried to replace the smartphone with this gadget by including SIM card slots. Not everyone wants to do that much with their smart watches, however. The easiest and surest way to tell time is a classic analog watch.

Skagen has stuck with this analog format under its Hagen line for a while, but its new watch called the Hagen Connected will include smart features for the first time. Skagen's smart watches will be able to track steps and water intake, control music, and give e-mail and text notifications. The face of the device is still analog, however, and the watch runs on a coin cell battery. The company has not said how long this battery will last, but without a bright LCD sucking up power, it should provide a nice reprieve from nightly recharges.

Like other smart watches, this Hagen Connected will require a smartphone app, allowing users to manage their watch’s functions. Activity tracking will synchronize with the app, for example, and users will be able to set goals. Skagen is also releasing the Hagen Activity Tracker, which will have similar functionality by synchronizing with the app. The Connected smart watch will retail for $195 and the activity tracker for $95.

Skagen is not the first to release analog watches with smart functions. It has been a trend among some makers that recognize not everyone wants to wear a screen on the wrist. It is a practical solution for those who loathe smart watches' poor battery life and appreciate the classic analog look. Some companies even combine mechanical smart watches with intelligent functions, which are already being offered in China.
