Smart contact lens, a quantum leap for augmented reality

Tech giants Samsung and Sony are undertaking separate projects to launch blink-activated smart contact lenses that capture images and videos. The goal is augmented reality without the headset.

Two technology giants are working independently to release smart contact lenses that can take photos and record videos with a blink of an eye.

Samsung has secured a patent in South Korea for a contact lens that uses motion and camera sensors, allowing it to display images and videos directly into the wearer's eyes. The blink-activated unit will also be able to transmit the files to a connected smartphone for viewing.

According to the patent, the contact lens will feature some wiring but this will be placed strategically in the outer edges to prevent it from obstructing the user's perspective.

Sony is working on a similar project. The Japan-based company plans to release a wireless smart contact lens that records what the wearer is seeing. The unit, still at the patent stage, is also activated by blinking, and consists of an image capture device, main control unit, storage module, antenna and piezoelectric sensor. The last will distinguish between a normal blink and a take-a-photo blink.

The patent indicated that by blinking a little longer than usual, the contact lens would a capture a photo or video. The unit will also include zoom and autofocus features.

Although both endeavors are still in the development stages, the tech companies are excited of the possibilities.

Imagine hiking or driving with the trail or road lighting up directing you to the correct route, or diving in the ocean and having the option to see each fish and coral annotated you can identify what you are seeing. Or perhaps looking at a restaurant and seeing the menu without going near it. The goal is augmented reality without the headset.
