Smart lock secures cabinets once it senses an earthquake

During natural disasters like earthquakes, priority is to keep oneself and loved ones safe. These emergency situations only allow a short time or split second for action, and often there is no time left to secure one’s belongings. A company, Open Mind Innovations, seeks to help people protect their valuables at home during these unfortunate events through a smart cabinet lock.

The product, called the Smart Lock System, is a wireless cabinet lock fitted with sensors that detect seismic movements. The mechanism will automatically be locked during an earthquake to prevent or at least minimize damages to valuables inside a cabinet. The system is also comprised of a control unit that connects wirelessly to the lock and remotes, and has an LCD. Besides remote controls, the cabinet lock can also be managed via a smartphone or compatible security system. It can support Z-Wave.

In addition, the smart cabinet lock is versatile enough to be used on other storage furniture and doors for access control. More cabinet locks of this type could emerge soon. There are already a few cabinet or drawer locks controlled by apps that have been drawing attention recently.
