Smart masking tape measures size, distance

Sensor Tape, a multifunctional and innovative smart tape from MIT, is making waves across different industries, including hardware. As the name implies, the adhesive strip’s intelligence relies on its small integrated light and proximity sensors that many now refer to as the future “computer by the meter”.

As regards hardware applications, the smart sensors give the tape capability to measure length, width, height, diameter and other dimensions just by sticking the latter on a surface easily like an ordinary masking tape. The tape can even estimate the distance between two objects where it is wrapped around on. It can be cut on parts indicated by guide lines.

The technology can be very useful in measuring tapes. Many new releases are becoming digital and some are now capable of uploading measurements to mobile devices. With Sensor Tape hitting the market soon, it opens up the possibility that future smart measuring tapes can simply come in the form of masking or duct tapes that are “connected” and very versatile. Lightweight variants that do away with the bulky case could emerge as well.

In electronics, medicine, and graphics and design, Sensor Tape is said to be applicable in DIY smart home setup, body posture detection and improvement, and motion-capture animation. Its makers are optimistic that they will discover more uses of the smart tape.
