As an effort to pry children away from glaring screens, an industrial designer from New Zealand came up with the Grasshopper, an app-controlled toy with all the leanings of a traditional one.

This toy was made for infants six years old and below. It offers a variety of educational and fun activities, including dancing or jumping from one tile to another in conjunction with the visual or audio cues from the app.

Four sensor-enabled silicone soft tiles in various colors and shapes have a charging dock that can be paired with mobile devices, from which the app can be controlled. The Bluetooth-enabled unit supports Android and iOS devices.

The designer Nicole Marshall made use of injection molded silicone for the outer part. The electronic component inside has a lithium battery, a wireless transmitter and a simple circuit.
