Resistors are one of the three basic passive components in electronic circuits. Over the years, they have transformed from leaded to chip configurations, spurred by the miniaturization trend. While the surface-mount type is ubiquitous nowadays, the traditional through-hole design remains widely available for applications that are subject to environmental stresses such as vibration and heat.

In China, passive component manufacturers cater to this range of requirements by offering film, wirewound and cement resistors, potentiometers, varistors and resistor arrays. The first two types currently make up the bulk of shipments, according to suppliers interviewed by Global Sources Electronic Components.

Metal film resistors lead the selection for home appliances, communication devices and instruments. These have 1ohm to 10Mohm resistance range, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 5 percent tolerances and -55 to 155 C operating temperature. For products with high-power circuits, there are wirewound kinds that can withstand up to 170 C environments.

In the SMD category, resistors in 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, 1210, 1812, 2010 and 2512 packages are the most sourced by domestic and overseas buyers, according to companies interviewed.

For key manufacturing inputs such as resistive bodies, ceramic substrates, electrodes and outer coating materials, Chinese suppliers usually turn to domestic providers, sourcing from foreign companies only when required.

Material and components costs rose slightly in 2021, resulting in higher resistor prices. In the coming months, there is a possibility these will stabilize.
