Crystal oscillators are frequency-stabilizing or timing devices in circuits used in consumer and automotive electronics, and communications equipment. Due to the ongoing miniaturization trend, they come mostly in SMD packages.
In China, manufacturers of this discrete component still offer DIP types, although surface-mount units already account for nearly 70 percent of their shipments, a share expected to keep rising in the coming years. Components in small SMD packages, such as 1008, 1610, 1610, 1210, 1612, 2012 and 2016, are expected to be in demand worldwide, according to companies interviewed by Global Sources.
Along with size, high frequency and precision and low power dissipation will be prime considerations in this market in the years to come. In terms of precision, Chinese suppliers target a frequency tolerance below ±10ppm, much lower than current deviations of ±20, ±25 and ±50ppm, to boost their competitiveness.
Mainstream crystal oscillators from Chinese companies are categorized into kHz and MHz units, collectively representing almost 90 percent of output. Typical sizes in the kHz category are 1610, 2012 and 3215, while the MHz group has 1008, 1210, 1612, 2016, 2520, 3225, 5032, 6035, 7050 and 8045. Other types available include XO, TCXO, VCXO and OCXO units.
The main components and materials used in the production of crystal oscillators include electrodes, quartz blanks, metal for the lids and ceramic for the bases. These are widely available domestically, so their supply and costs are not a problem for Chinese manufacturers, enabling them to keep their crystal oscillator prices unchanged.
