The light bulb has gone through several permutations over the decades, from incandescent to LED types. At present, connectivity and entertainment functions give rise to smarter units.

Major electronics brand Sony jumps into the bandwagon by launching the LED Light Bulb Speaker LSPX-100E26J model that functions as a light source and audio speaker. A smartphone can connect to the bulb via Bluetooth to adjust the brightness or volume. In the absence of a smartphone, a remote control can be used. The multifunction smart light bulb is easy to install in room corners and tight spaces. It debuts in Japan later this May and will be priced $199.

While Sony is the biggest brand to have released this kind of product, it was not the first. Shanghai-based Sengled has already introduced a smart bulb with a JBL Bluetooth speaker that can be controlled via its free app on Android and iOS. Audio can be enhanced by linking the unit with up to eight similar Bluetooth bulbs.

Another supplier, Propel, offers a LED bulb that also includes a Bluetooth speaker and a controller that pairs with Bluetooth devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Manual connections are not needed.

Overall, the convergence of otherwise single-function household objects like the humble lightbulb represents an opportunity for any retailer or distributor trying to get a foothold into the connected home.
