Spider-Man gets his own Spider-Drone

Movie tie-ins and other use of intellectual property is a good way to sell products. Robots have been successful with this strategy in the past. Remember BB-8? A company called Skyrocket Toys is now looking to capitalize on the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" movie with a spider-shaped drone. The Spider-Drone might have been inspired by the fact that the superhero himself appears to have a miniature drone in the movie. The trailer shows the spider on Spider-Man's chest flying off his costume, though fans will have to wait until the July 7 release to learn its use.

The Spider-Drone will probably not be as technologically advanced as whatever is depicted in the movie. The tie-in is a smart use of IP licensing, though. Since Skyrocket Toys are designed for children, a Spider-Man themed drone is the perfect hook to get kids to beg their parents for a drone.

The Spider-Drone is a quadcopter with rotors on the bottom of the legs. While four legs extend from the fuselage, those legs split into two at the end, giving it a total of eight legs so that it sticks with the spider theme. The drone also comes with a remote control that will quote lines from the movie. The model with a camera has a phone holder on the remote so users can stream video to their smartphones.

Since the Spider-Drone is licensing IP, it is more expensive than the technology requires. The price starts at $90 and goes up to $150 for the model with the camera. For the kid who wants to feel like he is Spider-Man, though, it is possible no other drone will do.
