Suppliers of LED modules beef up COB category

Carrying nine or more diodes on a single chip and having two contacts and one circuit, COB LED modules produce a higher light output using fewer components and generate less heat compared to SMD types. Based on these key advantages, they have high efficiency, long operating life, light weight and low costs.

Chinese manufacturers interviewed by Global Sources expect this category to become mainstream in LED lighting in the years ahead and will continue their R&D efforts to build their product selections.

The current range out of China also includes DIP and SMD LED modules, with the latter and COB kinds taking up the bulk of shipments. Main applications include advertising signage and general illumination.

In the SMD category, chips in sizes of 5050, 2835, 3528, 5630 and 5730 are typically used.

Across types, there are single-, dual- and full-color choices for indoor applications. For outdoor installations, water-resistant units are available with an IP65 to IP68 rating. All products are CE-approved, RoHS-compliant and UL-listed.

Chinese companies continue to emphasize their flexibility to customization, products based on which account for most of their shipments. They extend this business strategy to materials and components, such as LED chips, PCBs, cases and adhesive, allowing buyers to specify sources other than what are domestically available.

The cost of manufacturing inputs rose slightly in 2021, forcing some LED module manufacturers to adjust their product quotes. This trend may change in the coming months.

SMD, 95 to 105 lm/W luminous efficacy

This SMD LED module from Dongguan Lanjin Optoelectronic Co. Ltd, the B5730MD-10*2W, has 95 to 105 lm/W luminous efficacy, 70 or 80 CRI, and 2,700 to 3,500K white and 6,000 to 8,000K warm-white color temperatures. Its input voltage is 110 to 265VAC and the power rating 12x2W.

COB, 130 lm/W luminous efficacy

From Dongguan Lanjin Optoelectronic Co. Ltd, the COB LED Module-011-1 has 130 lm/W luminous efficacy, ≥80 CRI, 17mm light emitting area, 36 to 42V voltage, 650mA current and 25W power rating. It can be connected 12 in series or seven in parallel.

SMD, 160-degree beam angle

Moorol Technologies Co. Ltd’s LM-2835W4R-30 2835 SMD LED module uses four diodes and may be wired in a series of 30 modules. This IP67-rated unit has 70 to 85 CRI, 5,500 to 6,500K color temperature, 160-degree beam angle, 25,000-hour life span and -20 to 60 C operating temperature. Its input voltage is 12VDC and power consumption 1.2W.

The supplier requires an order of at least one box for delivery within three days.

SMD, 5,500 to 6,500K color temperature

The LM-2835W1R-50 from Moorol Technologies Co. Ltd is a 2835 SMD LED module with 70 to 85 CRI, 5,500 to 6,500K color temperature, 160-degree beam angle, -20 to 60 C operating temperature and 25,000-hour life span. This IP67-rated unit uses one LED per module and can be wired 50 modules in series. It has 12VDC input voltage and 0.3W power consumption.

The minimum order requirement is one box. Lead time is three days.
