China-based OnePlus has come back to the spotlight with its newest smartphone offering, further aiming to push the brand up market.
The OnePlus 5T is the company’s latest device, sporting a 6in AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, and doing away with the front home button. Bezels are still present, but they have been considerably reduced to make way for more screen, similar to the LG V30 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.
When it comes to security features, the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back. But the highlight is OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature, which the company claims can recognize faces and unlock the phone in under 0.2 second.
The NFC- and Bluetooth 5.0-enabled handset runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU with 6 or 8GB RAM, and 64 or 128GB ROM. It also incorporates a 20+16MP camera on the rear, and a 16MP camera on the front. The 5T is also said to have improvements when it comes to capturing low light and portrait photos.
Aside from USB Type-C for connectivity, OnePlus has decided to bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack, after ditching the standard with the OnePlus 5. This allows users to plug in a charger and earphones separately. The OnePlus 5T is powered by OxygenOS 4.7 based on Android 7.1. Its price tag starts at $499.
Many of these features have been implemented by other smartphone manufacturers for quite some time now. However, OnePlus is apparently taking its time, and this strategy seems to be working. After all, the brand has already grown a fan base from savvy and hardcore Android users. Offering premium devices in a pocket-friendly price, it won’t be far until China firms such as OnePlus gain enough traction to truly compete with more known brands worldwide.
