Smart lighting company Stack has found a way to help improve home security using a feature that was designed to build better convenience into the home. Stack's Home Awareness feature uses sensors built into each bulb to determine what rooms are occupied, and turns lights on and off accordingly. Keeping people from having to flip a switch every time they enter or leave a room is a small convenience, but it is the kind of thing that is getting more people to install smart devices in their homes.
Home Awareness has another perk. A new service allows users to get notifications when someone enters their home while they are away. For people who have smart lights but not a home security system, this might be a great upgrade. This is just some minor home security, but it is an easy and affordable way of adding a small layer of security to a home that previously had no monitoring system at all.
Perhaps the biggest convenience here is that one does not need any additional hardware or services. Stack bulbs will monitor the home and push notifications to the app when something is detected. Security cameras on the other hand have a lot more to handle. In smart homes, they usually come with a monthly service charge that will store a certain number of hours of recordings online. Some services have additional smart features that can detect movement and only save parts of a recording that are deemed notable.
The advantage of a security camera setup is clear: users get to see exactly what was happening in their homes. Not everyone wants the hassle and expense of using security cameras, though. While security is one of the main reasons people are turning to smart homes, most homes still do not have any kind of smart security features. Stack was smart enough to come up with a solution to that. At least with the company's latest update, people who want Stack's smart lights will also be getting some basic smart home security as an added bonus.
