As important as oral health is, with studies stating that activities such as flossing can help prevent heart ailments, a lot of people still find it difficult to brush their teeth regularly.

In answer to this, a dentist from Italy has invented GlareSmile, a smart toothbrush that cleans teeth using the proper brushing techniques, and in only 10 seconds, as opposed to dentists' suggestion of two minutes.

The toothbrush is built with three brushes, with the two outer ones working on the vestibular and palatal surfaces of the tooth, and the central brush aiming for the occlusal section. These brushes work simultaneously and in a continuous rotation to remove plaque. The technique also enables the user to finish cleaning his teeth in a single sliding movement.

The interchangeable heads come in sizes for adults and children. These need to be replaced every two months. By pairing the toothbrush with a mobile phone, the user is notified once it is time to buy new brushes. The app also tracks and records a person's brushing habits, which would come useful during the next dentist appointment.

GlareSmile is suitable for all ages. It provides convenience for the elderly as the unit requires no specific hand movements. Likewise, children will find the toothbrush easy to handle as it does not need any brushing technique or parental guidance.

The electric toothbrush comes with a touchscreen panel on which the brushing mode is selected. For instance, there is a gentler option for those with sensitive gums. A UV LED switches on automatically when the unit is turned off, signaling that it is disinfecting the bristles. A manual mode is also available, allowing the user to input his preferred settings.
