Image source: GettyAlthough widely used in cosmetics, toiletries, cleaning, gardening and most industry sectors, trigger sprayers have found an even bigger market in surface and floor cleaners and disinfectants due to heightened hygiene and safety awareness due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, they exceeded $500 million in 2020 and are forecast to reach $800 million by 2031, according to Transparency Market Research.
Trigger sprayers disperse more liquid compared to fingertip sprayers and pumps that can output only a certain amount per stroke, and have nozzles that can be adjusted to expel 0.22 to 1.5mL in spray, jet, mist, stream, continuous or foam.
A typical trigger sprayer for bottles has 15 parts – a dip tube and its shaft, closure, gasket, cap scall ring, ball, piston, spring, inner body, shroud, MBR and spray valves, foamer nozzle, screen and trigger. Most of these parts are made of plastics such as HDPE, PP, PE and LDPE, and the others of glass, stainless steel and rubber. In terms of screw cap or collar sizes for different bottles, common sizes include 28/400, 28/410, 20/410 and 24/410.
For child safety, whether for water- or chemical-based liquids, the options are a twist lock on the nozzle, a snap click screw cap that is not easily removed, or an off/on slide clip.
There are specific designs for particular applications. Sprayers for gardening and semiprofessional use have a long handle. For the pharmaceutical sector, the choice is between nonvented and vented trigger sprayers. The latter kind has a special membrane that prevents liquid from leaking but allows gas to escape, preventing the bottle from collapsing. For consumers, there are variants with an upside-down pump designed to be used at any angle for ease of use.
Companies offer color-matching trigger sprayers usually associated with industries. These choices include white, transparent and soft colors for cosmetics; orange, blue and purple for kitchen cleaners; blue, yellow, transparent and white for toilet cleaners; black, gray, red and yellow for automotive applications; transparent amber and white for the medical industry; black, white and ocean teal for salons; and green, black and red for gardening.
