Underwater gardening gains traction with aquascaping

The trend is being driven by the possibility to create an underwater world just by using a small container or bowl.

A growing number of gardeners in the UK are going out of traditional houseplants as home decoration, and now exploring the art of arrangement of aquatic plants and other natural materials-otherwise known as aquascaping.

While many countries around the world have long been engrossed in the craft, the cost of maintaining plants inside an aquarium have held some people back. Also, the science in preventing algae growth, and providing nutrients and carbon dioxide are found to be quite a chore.

Despite these complexities, gardeners are starting to take interest in aquascaping as a hobby. What's currently driving the trend is the possibility to start a landscape on a small budget just by planting inside a small container of water, and then providing light and carbon dioxide. Plants take care of algae, and are also often trimmed and fertilized. By adopting various styles, creations can be used as decoration at home or on desks.

One of the main objectives when it comes to aquascaping is creating a natural and healthy environment for pets, resembling a real underwater landscape. "Fish look and act better if you recreate their natural world," according to Cheryl Rogers, president of the US Aquatic Gardeners Association. "Gradually the aesthetics of the plants became more intriguing to me than the fish themselves." Some are also turning to the craft because of its therapeutic effects, relieving stress.

With more people being engaged in aquascaping these days, volume buyers can expect a rise in demand for fish bowls and aquariums. The trend not only promotes proper pet care, but it also teaches people how to cultivate plants properly, especially when underwater.
