HFCs, or hydrofluorocarbons, most commonly produced by air conditioners and refrigerators, are said to be harmful to the environment as they emit dangerous greenhouse gases damaging to the ozone layer.

In response, the US is considering phasing out the use of HFCs by 2019, instead opting for more environment-friendly alternatives such as hydrofluoroolefins, which are reported to break down quicker in the atmosphere.

The proposal is not only limited to the US. Developing countries such as India and China have been encouraged to do the same by 2021. On the other hand, some environmental agencies surmise that it could be more economical to use more expensive compounds for refrigerants in the long run.

This of course would mean that consumers are likely to deal with having to purchase more expensive air conditioners, though this also entails that they will enjoy lower electricity costs due to better efficiency.

Currently, buyers are on the lookout for suppliers who could keep up with the new technologies due to market demand. There is also greater interest in smart appliances, including air conditioners.
