Various SMD, DIP LEDs for Lamps

LED is a popular technology thanks to the advantages it offers in terms of energy efficiency, light quality, ability to withstand frequent switching, absence of heat or UV emissions, long life span and eco-friendliness. For lamps, this technology is increasingly leaning toward types for surface mounting, but DIP variants remain available.

Both SMD and DIP LEDs can be sourced from China, the world's largest producer and exporter of LED lighting products. SMD units account for the bulk of the country’s shipments, with those in 5050, 3528, 2835 and 3014 packages dominating suppliers’ selections. They come in versions with 200 to 1,200-lumen luminous flux, 80 CRI, 2,700 to 6,500K color temperature and 120-degree viewing angle. The typical operating temperature is -30 to 85 C and the life span 50,000 hours. In terms of electrical properties, commonly available SMD LEDs have 2 to 3.6V rated voltage, 0.02 to 0.03A rated current and 0.06 to 1W output power. They meet CE, FCC, RoHS, UL and cUL standards.

To meet diverse requirements in lamps, Chinese manufacturers accommodate requests for customization. This includes the sources of LED chips, copper and gold wires used.

Suppliers turn to domestic chip providers, including San’an, Silan Azure and Dalian Lumei, or major foreign players such as Cree, Epistar, Lumileds and SDK. The rest of the materials and components usually come from Chinese companies.

LED chip costs rose by 5 to 10 percent in the first half of 2023 due to increasing demand, forcing most Chinese manufacturers to raise their LED prices by 5 percent. The situation is expected to stabilize in the coming months, according to suppliers interviewed by Global Sources.
