During the 2018 Mobile World Congress in February, smartphone maker Vivo unveiled a concept phone called the ‘Apex’, which sports an all-screen display without the iPhone X-like notch. Months later, the company seems to be preparing the handset for primetime, with a teaser ad showing the phone for a June 12 launch.

Considering that the front of the 6in device will be filled entirely with the screen, Vivo had to find new places to house some sensors. The phone is now set to utilize an 8MP front-facing camera that pops-upthrough a motor. It also takes in-display fingerprint scanning up a notch, by allowing two fingerprints to be recorded. This can allow for better smartphone security.

The Apex handset also uses OLED panels that vibrate to create the sound for videos, calls and gaming, aiming to create an immersive experience for users. Other specifications for the device include a 2160x1080-pixel screen resolution, dual rear camera and a hi-fi audio chip.

With the consideration that many manufacturers seem to be racing to create the perfect all-screen phone, it won’t be far until new design concepts such as the one with Apex will be seen in public. Folding phones and computers seem to be on the horizon as well, so the next game-changer for the industry won’t seem to be too far away.

For now, volume buyers can start to expect slow but radical changes on what a smartphone is, and how they function for the average consumer. After all, this is inevitable on an increasingly mobile-focused world.
