SD cards are making another leap thanks to Western Digital's SanDisk. The company announced two new high-speed 256GB microSD cards, which are said to be the world's fastest. The new microSDXC UHS-I cards have Extreme and Ultra versions, which offer different transfer speeds depending on what people want to use the storage for.
The Extreme card can read and write at 100 and 90MBps, respectively. This is designed for users who want to capture and play back 4K videos. This would be ideal for drone users, for example. SanDisk said the new capacity allows for 14 hours of 4K videos.
The Ultra card has a slightly slower read speed at 95MBps. It is designed for additional mobile storage, however, which means extra space on Android devices since Apple gadgets do not offer memory expansion. SanDisk said Android phones and tablets will be able to store 24 hours of full-HD videos on these cards.
If 256GB of storage is not enticing enough, SanDisk said the microSD cards are also resistant to shocks, water, heat and X-rays. The Extreme version will sell for $200 while the Ultra will go for $150. The extra $50 gives users additional 5MBps when reading data, so only those who need that little oomph in read speed will find the Extreme card worthwhile. Either way, this is a big step forward for flash data. Mobile devices can finally get similar storage capacity as high-end laptops with solid state drives.
