Wider Temperature Range, Higher Capacity in NiMH Batteries

NiMH batteries have high energy density and capacity, with new-generation ones having no memory effect. They are environment-friendly because they are rechargeable, unlike alkaline types, and contain none of the toxic metals found in NiCd batteries but can power devices longer. Thanks to these advantages, NiMH batteries are widely used in lighting, remote controls, digital cameras, electric shavers and toothbrushes, toys, telematics control units and low-power security devices installed in areas that are difficult to access.

China, the largest producer of consumer-type NiMH batteries, is furthering research into them. The impetus for the comes from continuing demand from use in hybrid electric vehicles, communications equipment, and energy storage systems in polar research and other applications. One breakthrough was achieved by the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. These NiMH batteries have a temperature range of -45 to 60 C and a rated capacity of 350mAh/g. Mass production has begun, with a target of more than 10 million Ah every year.

In the consumer segment, Chinese manufacturers offer single-cell NiMH batteries in various sizes, mainly AAA and AA, and compliant with CE, RoHS and UL requirements. Typical products have 1.2 to 1.3V rated voltage, 30 to 80Wh/kg specific energy, 0 to 45 C charge and -40 to 55 C discharge temperatures and over 500-cycle life span. Companies also produce battery packs.

Materials used usually all come from domestic sources. Their costs did not change much in 2022 and will likely remain the same in the near future, which would mean stable battery prices until the end of this year.
