YouTube confirms 3D 360-degree video support.

YouTube's new support for 3D 360-degree video streaming may be a boon for 3D TV makers.

While it was touted as the next important step in TV, 3D TV never really took off in a way that makers had hoped. Although several movies have been produced with 3D in mind, day-to-day 3D TV watching has never really prospered. However, recent developments may make 3D and VR more accessible.

In many nations, there is a significant trend towards cord-cutting, which pertains to dropping existing cable or satellite TV subscriptions in favor of broadband cable. In addition, younger viewers are now more likely to watch video online rather than on traditional TV channels. That is why YouTube's recent announcement that it would support 360-degree and stereoscopic 3D video is so interesting.

While the announcement is clearly aimed at VR headset manufacturers and content makers, it may have a significant impact on 3D TV manufacturers as well. As more and more 3D content is developed for YouTube, it stands to reason that smart TVs that include 3D capability will become more in-demand. Whether it is through an app already resident on the smart TV or through an Android/other set-top box, viewers can already watch YouTube on their TVs.
