World's smallest 360-degree camera gets crowdfunding online

Small cameras are becoming more common thanks to an increasingly mobile population. The technology is also more accessible than ever because of wearable activity cameras such as GoPro. New technology, notably VR headsets, is likewise increasing demand for 360-degree videos. However, such cameras that support the format have not been portable. That is why the Nico360, billed as the world's smallest 360-degree camera, was launched on Indiegogo.

The device is being developed in Hong Kong and will retail for $199, according to the crowdfunding campaign. People who fund the product early can get it for $99. Two 16MP camera sensors from Sony are used on each side of the cubic device, producing a 360-degree video in 2560x1440 pixels. The Nico360 includes 32GB of internal storage and can live-stream videos to Android or iOS over a Wi-Fi connection.

The camera's small size makes it a good fit for accessories, which the company is offering. The campaign is also including a mobile VR headset, selfie stick and various camera mounts as part of its extra perks. The full accessories pack costs another $89.

Devices such as the Nico360 are clearly preparing for a world in which mobility is key. The camera is water-resistant and has electronic image stabilization. Increasingly, these kinds of portable cameras are seeing prices bid down by China competitors. This is a big challenge for the likes of GoPro and Samsung. While Nico360 may technically be the smallest 360-degree camera, other China rivals offer a variety of models in small bodies as well.
