The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics or WSTS now forecasts the market for semiconductors in the Americas region will enjoy 15 percent annual growth in 2015, up from 5.3 percent given in December 2014 (see chip market forecast raised for 2014, 2015). This, together with strength in the Asia-Pacific region, has led the organization to increase its worldwide estimate for 2015.
Forecasts for the other main geographic areas have also been altered, with a more pessimistic view for Europe and Japan and the opposite for the Asia-Pacific. Europe has been marked down to a contraction in dollar terms of 2 percent compared with growth of 1.5 percent. Japan's chip market is expected to shrink by 3.7 percent as against a near break-even of -0.3 percent in December 2014. Finally, the Asia-Pacific market is projected to rise by 4.2 percent, slightly stronger than the 3.8 percent given before.
As a result, worldwide semiconductor market growth has been marked up to 4.9 percent the previous forecast of 3.4 percent. The worldwide estimate for 2016 growth has not been changed and remains at 3.1 percent.
