Samsung continued to lose market share and shipment volume YoY.

According to IDC’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker service, Xiaomi has become the third-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, shipping 17.3 million units in Q3 2014. Xiaomi sold more than three times as many phones in Q3 2014 than it did in Q3 2013, when it sold 5.6 million units. The company leapfrogged competitors Huawei (which was No. 3 in Q2 2014), LG and Lenovo.

However, Lenovo’s now-closed acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google would have made it the third-largest manufacturer, moving LG down to fifth place and Xiaomi to fourth. Nevertheless, the ranking would not change the fact that Xiaomi has burst into the market in a nearly-unprecedented way – and it remains officially available only in China and 10 other markets.

While Xiaomi is growing by leaps and bounds, Samsung saw its shipments decline despite retaining the No. 1 ranking. Shipments fell by 8.1 percent YoY, and its market share declined by 8.7 percent even as the overall smartphone market grew by 25.2 percent to an estimated 327 million units. The continued pressure on Samsung on both the high-end and low-end markets continues. All that said, it is unlikely that Samsung is going to lose the crown as the largest seller of handsets in the near future – the behemoth still holds 23.8 percent of the market and sells almost twice as many phones as Apple, its closest competitor.

As for Apple, it remains the second-largest manufacturer, selling 39.3 million phones during the quarter. As IDC notes, what is impressive is not just that the company had a record launch with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but that most of the volume was comprised of the older iPhone 5S and 5C. While Apple did lose a small amount of market share this quarter (-0.9 percent), indications are that demand for its high-end products has not slowed.

Finally, while Xiaomi did gain 3.2 percent in market share YoY, the biggest winner are companies that are not in the top five. While IDC does not break out its data beyond the top 5 vendors, the “Other” category gained 5.4 percent in market share and beat the overall market by shipping 159 million units, accounting for 48.6 percent of the total market. As big names continue to find success, many smaller firms like Motorola, Huawei, Coolpad and others are clearly finding their way as well.
