The next iteration of the popular ZigBee smart home standard will use EnOcean energy harvesting for better building and lighting control.

The ZigBee Alliance industry association has said that it will work to combine EnOcean energy harvesting with ZigBee 3.0 to help address a breadth of IoT applications in smart home, smart city and industry 4.0.

The ZigBee Alliance said it will work with the EnOcean Alliance, which includes more than 100 companies and organizations, that has formed around EnOcean GmbH, a supplier of a number of self-powered modules and transmitters that make use of energy harvesting for building and lighting control.

ZigBee is a mesh protocol that provides low power wireless networking on unlicensed sub-gigahertz spectrum and at 2.4GHz. Version 3.0, which has just been ratified, unifies previous application-specific device descriptions, behaviors and profiles into a common applications layer that supports IoT for smart homes buildings and neighborhoods.
