From octa core tablets and phones to health bracelets targeting niche markets, here is a rundown of the top product trends from the first Mobile Electronics Fair.

With more than 1,600 booths featuring smartphones, tablets, wearables and accessories, the latest trends in the industry were seen at the world’s No. 1 sourcing fair for mobile electronics held from October 18-21 in Hong Kong. Take a look at the 8 big trends from the show.

Water-resistant Bluetooth speakers

Most suppliers at the show said that water-resistant Bluetooth speakers are in high demand. Many Bluetooth product suppliers showcased models with at least IPX6 water proof level. Such products are designed for use at swimming pool parties, on boats, while surfing, or other humid conditions. Further, buyers are also looking for Bluetooth speakers that can be used in outdoor activities such as camping.

Price is an increasing concern for buyers, especially for those from South America and Africa. Most suppliers have observed that these buyers are more price-sensitive.

Buyers from Europe and the US are also concerned about the sound quality of Bluetooth speakers. Especially for US buyers, the bass quality of speakers is the primary issue.

Material combination in smartphone cases

For phone case products to stand out, exhibitors believe that they should have the following criteria: combination of quality protection, practical use and fashionable design. In order to ensure products’ protection, performance and good exterior design, suppliers adopt two or three different materials with different colors. For example, cases with silicon frames and PC back panels or aluminum frames with TPU or leather back panels can provide mobile phones good protection against water damage and impact. These materials also allow for attractive colors and patterns on the product's surface. Suppliers also show their creativity in the products’ practical features.

Hard cases for "bending" iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 launch is said to be the biggest event in the mobile electronics space this year. As buyers and suppliers scramble to get a hold of the latest iPhone, rumors have surfaced that Apple’s new device displays one flaw: it bends.

Some iPhone 6 users claim that Apple might have reduced the thickness of the iPhone 6’s frame that caused it to bend.

On the back of this issue, many smartphone case manufacturers are grabbing the opportunity to profit from the “bending” iPhone 6 by releasing hard cases made of aluminum, TPU, or other hard materials. The thickness level is also a selling point among iPhone 6 case manufacturers. To keep up with the market trend, manufacturers are making their products as thin as possible.

Power banks slim down and add features

Targeting the US and European markets, exhibitors showcased slimmer power banks at the show.

Most of the slimmer power bank models used Li-poly cell batteries to achieve the thinner size and reasonable power capacity (usually less than 6,000mAh).

For other markets, suppliers tend to release larger capacity power banks with multiple functions. According to exhibitors, buyers were interested in models with more than 8,000mAh capacity and additional functions like LED flashlights, dual USB ports with intelligent charging and even WiFi/3G routing.

Growing demand for 4G phones

The fair witnessed many exhibitors showcasing their hottest 4G phones, which echoes the growing demand for this segment in the mainstream market. Exhibited models at this year’s fair feature Android 4.4, MTK quad-core with super slim design. These 4G phones typically have G+G HD touchscreen that go between 4.7in and 5.5in, 1GB of RAM (or 2GB), 8GB of ROM (or 16GB). They are also equipped with dual cameras that shoot between 2MP and 8MP, and support GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Meanwhile, real octa-core phones also attracted many buyers at the show. Several smartphone exhibitors launched their flagship models in an attempt to capture the market earlier than others.

Quad and octa core tablets

New products from tablet exhibitors at the show suggested that octa core tablets using MTK chipsets and quad-core tablets using Intel chipsets are the two new directions for tablet manufacturing in China. Though the appearances of these tablets are almost the same as others, their performances are significantly improved at almost double compared with quad-core tablets using previous MTK or other chipsets.

The overseas sales supervisor of Hengdi Chen Jiaxin said that according to the results of scoring software Antutu, the company’s latest octa tablet H8MG2 has a score of 25,000, a nearly 50 percent improvement over its old quad core tablet with a score of 17,000. However, the octa chipset is still limited by memory, which cannot exceed 1GB. However, it is still the leading trend in the tablet industry.

Performance is also good for tablets using the Intel chipset. A sales manager of Intel said the performance of the quad-core Intel chip is at least as good as octa chip from MTK and that Intel’s chips are more stable.

Wearables address fitness and fashion

This show had tens of wearables suppliers showing off new products. Some new trends were identified among the assorted products. These trends primarily fall into three categories: athletics, safety and fashion. Wearables catering to fitness-oriented users were the most in demand from buyers, according to many suppliers. Buyers would like to have devices with longer battery life and more accurate sensors.

Safety needs are addressed by devices for the elderly and children. The general manager of Shenzhen Top Watch Communication Technology Co. Ltd, Zhou Qiong, said the primary issue of safety-focused wearable products is the safety of the material itself. When suppliers are producing new products, they should consider the safety of the material, design, function and circumstances of use.

Fashion is an important requirement for anything wearable, especially for women, and some devices are designed with fashion specifically in mind. The point of wearable devices is that they should be products people are willing to wear. That is why many suppliers hire design companies to help them with the look of their products.

Health bracelets for niche segments

In the health monitoring segment, many suppliers are releasing bracelets equipped with temperature, blood pressure, heart beat and sleep monitoring functions. However, suppliers are still working on solving several issues such as accuracy, lower power consumption and longer working time. Meanwhile, smart bracelets with GPS tracker are becoming popular products in the children and elders segment.

The Mobile Electronics show witnessed a range of exhibitors showcasing their wearable bracelets. Aside from featuring basic functions like pedometers, suppliers are now targeting more specific segments by adding unique features to their products.
