Chinese manufacturers of copper wires are pursuing research into advanced composite materials. One such R&D undertaking focuses on a highly conductive copper composite with high tensile strength, a compound of 99 percent copper and 1 percent carbon nanotube. This input is expected to find commercial adoption in wires and foils in the next several years.
Widely available at present are wires with copper content of 99.9 percent. These have a diameter ranging from 0.01 to 15mm with ±0.005mm tolerance and an IACS conductivity rating of more than 100 percent. Options based on hardness or temper level include O, 1/2H, 3/4H, H, EH and SH. These wires are made using T1, T2, T3, C1100, C5111, TU1, TP1, TP2, C1020, C1201, H62, H63 or H65 materials.
Prices rose by about 10 percent in the first half of 2026 due to the higher cost of copper. Although this upward trend in material outlay will persist the rest of the year, it is expected to be at a lower rate.
Chinese wire manufacturers will gradually shift their attention to other applications such as AI data centers, electric vehicles and advanced IC packaging. As such, they will continue working on introducing high-purity and superthin copper wires.
China is a major production hub for copper wires and will continue to lead in this market, realizing about 5 percent CAGR between 2025 and 2031, according to QY Research. Globally, this category is projected to reach $133.81 billion by 2031 from a modest 1.2 percent CAGR from 2025.
