Solido3D's OLO is one of the least expensive 3D printers available today.

Built by Italian 3D printing firm Solido3D, the OLO has the potential to put small-scale, personal 3D printing in the palm of the user. The device, about the size of a brick, uses the light from a smartphone app to cure photopolymer resin into the required shape. The lid contains the build plate and electronics, and the device itself is battery-operated, which means it does not need to be tied down to any particular location.

To print, the user pours in the resin, starts the app, chooses the design, pops the smartphone into the OLO and waits for a few minutes until a small plastic object is created. The device's printing size is 7.6x12.7x5cm.

Solido3D has been showing off the new device at the Maker Faire in New York. It will debut as a Kickstarter project this month, and has been reported to cost about $99. This makes it among the cheaper options for personal 3D printing although it may not have the scale or capability of a high-end printer such as Makerbot. Nevertheless, OLO boasts features that are completely out of reach at this price point for any other system.
