STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education is becoming more and more crucial to primary and secondary global academic systems. It makes sense, then, for robotics firms to address the education market more seriously than in the past. After all, they are not only giving students a chance to become engaged in hard sciences, but are also creating their future employees and consumers.

The Sphero SPRK Edition is aimed to do exactly that. The robot itself is a clear plastic ball, which is the only distinctive difference with the company’s Sphero 2.0 released 2 years ago, but it includes a software package intended to allow a lot more accessibility. In addition, it has programmable LED lights that can flash on command. The $130 robot can be programmed with a C-based language called OVAL, and can be controlled and programmed through a dedicated smartphone app.

The device is connected via Bluetooth and lasts more than an hour on a single charge. It can also be equipped with accessories such as shells that would allow it to be used outside.
