Just for You

AC motors provide power to many everyday appliances, including fans, air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines, as well as traditional industrial equipment such as pumps, compressors, conveyors and metalworking machinery. They have simple and durable construction, offering low maintenance and cost while delivering high efficiency and reliability, all especially advantageous in demanding and constant-duty applications.

These attributes make AC motors the premier choice for the propulsion device in electric vehicles and the mechanical power or workhorse in industrial automation, encompassing smart manufacturing, robotics and control systems.

The market for AC motors will therefore continue to grow, projected to reach $62.7 billion by the end of 2025 and $88.7 billion by 2033 or realize 4.43 percent during the period, according to Global Growth Insights. This rising demand is attributed to the trend for energy-efficient solutions and automation.

In terms of applications, the estimated market shares are 30 percent for industrial machinery, 25 percent for home appliances, 20 percent for HVAC equipment, 12 percent for motor vehicles, specifically electric types, and 10 percent for aerospace and transportation.

Technological advancements

Thanks to a widening application base, which also includes wind and solar systems, there is a continuing trend for innovation in motor design in terms of materials such as rare-earth magnets, soft magnetic composites and nanomaterials.

IoT integration is another relevant area, driving the production of smart motors that employ sensors for real-time monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance. This results in reduced downtime and repairs. There are other performance-enhancing aspects such as the use of variable frequency drives for better matching of output and load requirements, sophisticated controllers for precise speed and cooling systems for better thermal management.

In China, manufacturers are exploring advanced materials and techniques. Ningbo Zhonghang has released a series of high-voltage AC motors for the industrial and power sectors. These compact units, available in low-noise variants with two, four six or eight poles, have 0.55 to 315kW power, 380V and 50Hz rated voltage and frequency, up to 40 C operating temperature and IP55 rating.

Major market

China is a major production hub for AC motors, realizing $18.5 billion in value in 2023 and a 10 percent increase the following year and likely doing so again in 2025 based on information from ChinaIRN. The country is also the largest market, owing to its robust manufacturing sector, industrial automation pursuits and electric vehicle development.

Because of such a captive market, many Chinese AC motor suppliers will continue to raise their production output. Eyeing the EV application, Chengdu Huachuan Denso announced recently that it would be investing $77.78 million in a project in the next three years. When completed, the company will have a total annual capacity of 2 million motors for EVs and 1.8 million units for off-road vehicles.

Most AC motor manufacturers export their products as well, allocating between 30 and 70 percent of total shipments for various destinations. The volume for overseas markets increased steadily in recent years, with projections pointing to a similar trend in export value lasting through 2025. The forecast was based on the CAGR of 8.81 percent from 2020 to 2023 and the $3.069 billion realized from January to June 2024.

However, trade tensions resulted in higher tariff on China-made motors, with US-bound shipments dropping by 12 percent in the first quarter of 2025, according to Sohu News. Nevertheless, many companies are confident of new opportunities in markets outside the US.

Wolong, one of the first-tier motor makers in China, has set up 13 factories and four research centers overseas to enhance service delivery while anticipating trade challenges. Some of these facilities are found in Vietnam, the UK, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Poland and India. The company had a turnover of $28.88 million in 2002, reaching $2.25 billion by 2024 or an annual growth rate of 21.9 percent during the period.

The other major homegrown players include Wannan Motor, Jiamusi Electric Machine and Jiangte Motor.

There are hundreds of manufacturers offering AC motors in China, with some companies from the US and Japan. Many are found in the coastal areas, including Ningbo, Changzhou, Suzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Shenzhen. There are also suppliers in the inland provinces such Sichuan, Shaanxi and Heilongjiang.

Single- and 3-phase AC motors

Asynchronous and synchronous AC motors can be sourced in China. There are single-phase types that are mainly for household appliances and small machinery, as well as three-phase units for industrial applications.

Typical motors are available with two, four, six, eight or 10 poles, Class B, F or H insulation and IP44, IP54, IP65 or higher rating. These have a rated voltage of 220, 380 or 450V, frequency of 50/60Hz and efficiency of over 85 percent.

Makers accept customization requests for sizes and other specifications. They ensure products meet industry safety standards, including UL, CE, CCC and RoHS.

Components such as stators, rotors, bearings and cases are usually obtained from domestic companies, although imported materials can also be used when preferred. So far, input costs have been stable and will likely remain so in the coming months, keeping motor prices at current levels.
