Wireless chargers have long been a thing with smartphones, but Apple’s take on the technology might not be ready just yet.

When Apple introduced the iPhone X back in 2017, the company not only boasted about the bezel-less display, but also emphasized its wireless charging capability. The Cupertino-based tech firm also announced AirPower, a wireless charging pad that can simultaneously charge the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. However, a year later, it seems that Apple has fallen silent on this device.

After the unveiling of the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max this year, it omitted any mention of the said charger. Moreover, as CNBC notes, Apple did not focus on the wireless charging capabilities of the new handsets, and all mentions of AirPower have been deleted from its website.

It is now speculated by Apple watchers that the firm won’t be able to fulfill its promise to make the charging pad available in the market by 2018. According to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, the company is likely struggling to make AirPower work as originally advertised. He further speculates that the unicorn device might have already been scrapped.

In the past year, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller boasted about the benefits of AirPower. “We also think we can make the wireless charging experience even better,” he stated. “It might help move the entire industry forward.” Schiller indicated that by having such a device, users will no longer have to fumble around for separate chargers.

With the absence of AirPower, volume buyers can source for alternatives. Some chargers from manufacturers can already charge the iPhone and the Apple Watch simultaneously. This will become a big hit with consumers who are looking into using just one device for topping up their Apple products.
