Despite widespread site outages, Apple received a million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 24 hours, more than any Apple product in that time frame. This represents roughly twice the number of iPhone 5 pre-orders in 2012. The breakdown between the two models was not released by Apple, so it remains to be seen whether or not Apple’s 5.5in screen is as popular as the company hopes. Nevertheless it appears to be a significant win for the company.

This does not represent the total number of phones expected to be sold on its release date on September 19, but there is one note of caution among the accolades. In its press release, Apple noted that the phones will be delivered to customers “beginning on Friday and throughout September.” The latter comment has led some to wonder if the rollout will be slowed by rumored supply issues, especially for the iPhone 6 Plus.

It is still also unclear if Apple will be able to meet demand for the millions expected to go to a physical store to buy the new iPhones; the opening weekend sales for the iPhone 5S and 5C saw a total of 9 million total units sold.
