Contrary to popular misconception, smart gadgets actually give homeowners the power to minimize their energy consumption. According to an entry in Constellation's Energy Blog, "smart-home hubs can turn appliances off completely when not in use, eliminating the energy drain caused by 'idling' appliances and improving energy conservation."

These smart devices, particularly security solutions, are driving home automation with revenue projected to exceed $57 million by 2024 from $18 million this year, according to a new report by Juniper Research.
